Island earns first place Texas Governor’s Community Achievement Award

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Its an award the Island has been acknowledged for in the past, but this year marks the first time it wins Texas Governor’s Community Achievement top honors.
The first place Govoner’s Community Achievement Award recommendation comes with two prestigious prizes. One will be placed on display inside the City Hall lobby, and the second is $90 thousand grant that will be put to good use on an Island TxDot right of way project.
Last year the Island received a second place nod for its excellence in community achievement and environmental impact with its composting programs to weekly recycling drop-off opportunities for residents.
“We are extremely proud of the parks and Keep SPI Beautiful and everyone who has done their part to Keep South Padre Island beautiful,” said Victor Baldovinos, Island Environmental Health Director. ”
For more than thirty years, Keep Texas Beautiful, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), has awarded the prestigious Governor’s Community Achievement Awards to Texas communities for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful.
This year, ten winning communities will share $2 million in landscaping awards from the Texas Department of Transportation, with the amount based on population size. The funds are used for landscaping projects along local rights-of-way. A community’s environmental program is judged on achievements in seven areas:
- Community Leadership and Coordination
- Public Awareness and Outreach
- Environmental Education
- Beautification and Community Improvement
- Litter Prevention and Cleanup
- Solid Waste Management
- Litter Law and Illegal Dumping Enforcement
Texas’ 2020 Governor’s Community Achievement Awards top 10 comunity winners: South Padre Island, Weston Lakes, Lago Vista, Levelland, White Settlement, Alvin, The Colony, Harlingen, Tyler, and Grand Prairie.
The Govoner’s Community Achievement Award is Keep Texas Beautiful’s initiative higeighest award for commitment to making Texas communities a better place to live work and play.
