SOUTH PADRE ISLAND POST — The vote to award Friends of Animals Rescue $50,000 to continue its work on the Island was unanimous at the recent city council meeting.

And the organization has had their hand full as animal intake has increased on the Island, according to Sharry Pindard’s report to Island leaders.

“We are required to provide this service or outsource it,” said Alita Bagley, Island city commissioner place 4. “So although I am always an advocate on what we are spending on the budget I think we are getting a pretty good deal.”

Between the months of January 1, to July 31, Friends of Animal Rescue have taken in 162 animals consisting of dogs, cats, birds and wildlife.

Pindard said the shelter took in 60 dogs, adopted 28, reunited 34 and currently have nine up for adoption.

She said 127 cats have been taken in this year so far. They were able to adopt 99, reunite 17 and 42 are in the shelter for adoption.

“So we have kitties who needs new homes,” Pindard said.

Pindard said Friends of Animal Rescue have given aid to 75 wildlife animals including opossums and raccoons. She reported 42 birds were taken in and all have been released.

She said they microchiped 155 animals, vaccinated 191 for rabies, 141 have been spay or neutered and 58 pets were assisted in being rehomed.

One of the many animals where have stayed at the animal shelter was Aruora, a gray pitbull. She stayed 903 days before she was adopted and taken to her new home in Brownsville.

“If she was at any other shelter she would not have made it,” Pindard said. “And she is living the dream right now with a wonderful new mommy.”

Friends of Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) that was formed in 2010 to assist the City of Port Isabel when the City took control of the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter. After placing the shelter’s 400 animals, Friends refocused their efforts towards the animals on South Padre Island, where we became the City’s licensed animal shelter.
