PORT ISABEL – After being a champion on the Port Isabel Tarpons football field in the 1990’s Raul “Tinker” Villarreal turned his passion for scoring touchdowns into training the next generation of champions in the weight room.

Little did he know that when he became a high school football coach he was going to make a big splash in the sports world of powerlifting in the Valley and throughout Texas.

Today, he has coached more State Championship teams and athletes in Texas than most coaches, and he has the road map to success in his hand to share with the world in his fist book titled ” Building Powerlifting Champions: Powerlifting Guide for Coaches and Lifters.”

“I wrote the book to help coaches and lifters gain knowledge about the amazing sport of powerlifting,” Villarreal said. “I also wrote the book to inspire and motivate anyone that reads the book. My passion is to positively impact everyone around me.”

Villarreal is currently the Alice ISD powerlifting head coach. He coached Alice’s Brooke Castillo to the State Powerlifting Champion title and Miggy Saenz to State runner-up at the 2024 Texas State Powerlifting Championship.

According to Villarreal, he is planning to celebrate the release of his book on powerlifting at the Port Isabel library for a chance for local readers to get a copy signed.
