Raul “Tinker” Villarreal Leads Alice High School to Powerlifting Glory
Brook Castillo Claims Back-to-Back State Titles at Bert Ogden Arena

EDINBURG — Raul “Tinker” Villarreal has long been a respected figure in South Texas high school athletics, and this year, he added another chapter to his legacy by leading the Alice High School girls powerlifting team to a Texas High School Powerlifting Championship at Bert Ogden Arena.
A graduate of Port Isabel High School, Villarreal was a standout athlete for the Tarpons football team in the mid-1990s, where he first built a reputation for toughness, leadership, and competitive spirit — all qualities he now brings to his coaching. That same drive is what helped shape a championship-caliber team in Alice.
With the spotlight on Alice, senior Brook Castillo rose to the occasion once again, winning her second consecutive state title in dominant fashion. Known for her focus and unmatched work ethic, Castillo delivered a performance that cemented her place among the top lifters in the state.
“She’s a warrior,” said Villarreal. “Brook has set the standard, and she continues to lead by example.”
But the state title wasn’t a solo feat. Teammates Diedra Chapa and Payson Trejo also came through with powerful lifts and clutch performances that helped push Alice to the top of the team standings. Together, the trio set the tone for the championship meet, turning heads and earning respect from coaches and competitors across Texas.
“This team is built on heart, hard work, and trust,” Villarreal added. “Every lifter had a role, and Diedra and Payson were huge for us — they showed up when it mattered most.”
The electric atmosphere inside Bert Ogden Arena only fueled the Lady Coyotes’ intensity as they outlifted powerhouse programs to claim the top spot.
With a seasoned coach at the helm — and deep South Texas roots — Alice High School is now firmly established as a force in Texas high school powerlifting, and the future looks just as strong.
